Branding Surry County Through People, Not Just Promotion
Updated: Jul 10
What Does It Feel Like to Live Here?
Instead of beginning with taglines and marketing fluff, we started with a question: What does it feel like to live here?
The answers were honest and funny and heartwarming. People talked about favorite back roads and Friday night football games. About teachers who double as neighbors. About walking into a coffee shop and seeing someone who knows your kids by name.
That’s the heartbeat of this place. And it’s exactly the kind of thing you can’t fake in a slick promo video.
Rooted in the Real Stuff
Of course, Surry County has the stats—fiber internet, solid schools, access to healthcare, and quick drives to bigger cities like Winston-Salem and Greensboro.
But stats don’t make people stay. Stories do.
And around here, the stories sound like this:
A young family finds a home where their kids can grow up outdoors, without feeling rushed all the time.
A small business owner gets a shoutout on the radio and customers show up the next day.
A healthcare professional moves here thinking it’s a stepping stone—and ends up building a life.
These are the real things that make someone say, “Yeah, this feels right.”
Three Kinds of People We’re Talking To (And Maybe You’re One of Them)
We’ve been building this brand with three audiences in mind:
Families – the kind who want roots, not just good real estate. They’re looking for schools they can trust, outdoor space to play, and a slower pace that lets them actually enjoy life.
Entrepreneurs – people with ideas and hustle, who are tired of burnout culture and want to grow something meaningful in a community that cheers them on.
Educated Talent – folks in healthcare, manufacturing, engineering, finance… people who could live anywhere, but would choose here if they knew what we have to offer.
Each group has different goals, but they’re all looking for the same thing: connection, possibility, and a place that feels like home.
This Brand Has a Pulse
This isn’t about being flashy. It’s about being real.
We’re not just marketing a location—we’re telling the truth about what makes Surry County special. It’s about slower Saturdays. Front porch conversations. Farmers markets. Hiking trails. Knowing your neighbor. Raising your kids in a place that still feels safe.
That’s the brand we’re building. A brand that breathes.
What’s Next?
Now that we’ve listened to the voices in the room—business owners, community members, parents, leaders—we’re turning those stories into something people can see and share.
Messaging. Photos. Websites. Events. Things that reflect who we actually are, not who we think we’re supposed to be.
This is just the beginning, but the direction is clear. Surry County isn’t trying to copy anyone else. We’re doubling down on what makes us us.
And when we do that well? The right people will find us. And they’ll want to stay.
